Jacinta Dennett's workshop, Enjoying the Flight, explored harpists' reasons for wanting to perform and gave them preparation techniques to help them embrace performance.

AGM and Harp Gathering: Saturday 25th of August 2018

The Society held the 2018 AGM and Harp Gathering at the beautiful Canning Town Hall. We were so pleased to have a sunny day that we took the harps outdoors and played our selection of 'old favourites' beside the lake. We did not have enough members to reach a quorum for the AGM so we rescheduled a meeting for the same time the following week. We were able to run the AGM and elect the 2018-2019 committee at the meeting. Go to the 'Our Committee' page under the 'About Us' drop down menu.

Yi-Yun Loei Harp Recital and Q&A

Audience members were treated to an intimate performance by Yi-Yun Loei, a harpist from Perth who has played in countries all over the world. The recital was held in a private home, giving it a cosy, relaxed feeling. Yi-Yun followed the recital with a question and answer session where she shared her experiences of moving to America to continue her harp training and finding opportunities in countries like the Czech Republic and China.

Introduction to Therapeutic Harp Workshop with Tina Tourin

This workshop was for anyone interested in learning to play harp to help and support others. We learnt about playing for people in hospital, palliative care, aged care and a range of medical, care and therapeutic settings. This workshop was attended by experienced harpists and people who are at the beginning of their harp therapy journey. This was a unique opportunity to meet Tina Tourin, who has played a huge role in developing therapeutic harp around the world. It was also a wonderful opportunity to meet other people who are on the therapeutic harp journey.

Information event: Stories from the Bedside - The Healing Power of Music

Tina Tourin played some beautiful harp pieces and shared her experiences as a therapeutic harp practitioner. This was a great opportunity to meet Tina Tourin and some Western Australian therapeutic harp players.

Harp Carolling Rehearsal and Gathering

On Saturday 4th of November, a small group of harpists came together at the John Leckie Pavillion in Nedlands to play through some Christmas music in preparation for the Christmas performance scheduled for the 2nd of November. The group consisted of President Shamarra, treasurer Jane, secretary Catherine and two of Jane's students. Vice-president Eliza led the group. The Christmas songs were arranged by Sylvia Woods. Once a song could be played confidently on the harp, some players were brave enough to sing along. Most songs were in English but Eliza taught the group how to pronounce the French lyrics of the song "Entre le Boeuf". We had a small audience consisting of family members and friends. Following the gathering, afternoon was served (Fred's famous sandwhiches were - as usual - a popular choice!).

2017 AGM & Harps Gathering

What a fabulous turn-out we had for our AGM and harps gathering on Saturday 12th of August despite the wet and windy weather! After setting up in the cozy Mary Lockett Hall of Christ Church in Claremont, we held the AGM where our new committee was officially elected. We thanked past president Jane McCabe for her incredible work and spirit, and acknowledged past committee Fred Brewer for his endless work and compassionate attitude by awarding him an Honourary Life Membership.

Following the AGM we had the first harps gathering of this financial year. Due to illness, Bronwyn Wallis was unable to lead the group. Vice-president Eliza consequently led the harpists (of literally all ages and levels) through some warm-ups and then through the set repertoire, which included both harp-only pieces and harp and singing songs. Member Kira Gunn also performed two solos for everybody.

Afternoon tea was served at the back of the hall after the gathering.

Harp Camp 2017

Over the June long week-end, a bunch of harpists gathered at the Woodman Point Camp site near Fremantle for the annual harp camp. The week-end was spent playing a lot of harp (unsurprisingly), making friends, singing, and eating delicious food cooked by committee member Daniella Bretto. We had two harpists leading us into various workshops and master classes: Catherine Ashley (from Perth) and Jacinta Dennett (our guest harpist from Melbourne). Both these respected professionals and teachers gave advice, tips and insights into playing the harp.

We would like to thank Jacinta and Catherine for sharing their expertise with us; the committee for their hard work in organising and putting on this camp; and for all harpists who attended!
